Indicator Birding Associate Guides

A wide variety of people contribute to our expertise and the quality of tours, either as guides, tour leaders and advisors to key areas which we visit. The following people are associates of Indicator Birding:

Pete Irons

Pete has been an active birder since the age of 14. He has birded extensively in Southern Africa, the United States and South America, and is actively involved in leading conservation projects in Dinokeng - (north-east Gauteng). Pete is a popular leader of club outings, and customised tours to his local patch - which he knows intimately. Pete Irons has been the main driving force in the development of the Dinokeng area as a birding area of note.
When not birding Pete is a Veterinarian and family man, who lives with his family in the Seringveld Conservancy area.

Duan Biggs

Duan grew up in the Kruger National Park, South Africa, an ideal place to inspire and nurture an interest in birding and the environment. Duan's knowledge of birding in Kruger and the adjacent areas is thus exceptional and he also birded widely in South and Southern Africa. His interest in birds has taken him to Europe, North America and East Africa where he is involved in bird-focussed ecological research. Duan has a particular interest in promoting birding and birding tourism amongst poorer communities and has co-ordinated and been involved in these types of projects in South Africa, Namibia and Kenya. Duan has been guiding for a number of years and he is a regular guide for Lawsons's Specialist Bird tours as well as Birding Africa. Duan partakes in ornithological consulting to game reserves and lodges in South Africa and takes part in a number of bird monitoring and research programs.

Duan's desire to share his knowledge of birds and other aspects of nature led him to take part in informal guiding activities from a young age, as well as making contributions to several popular birding and nature magazines. He holds certification from the Field Guide Association of Southern Africa.

Duan is currently studying Sustainable Ecological Management at the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
