The PBC committee repaired to Danie and Renette Opperman's bushveld farm
near Pienaarsriver this past weekend to consider the weighty matters of the
birding constituency of the greater Pretoria area. Despite the gravity of
our task, we did manage to sneak the odd glance at the birds around us.
Notable observations included many pied babblers, colourful parties of
blackcheeked, violeteared, and blue waxbills, melba finches and redbilled
firefinches; whitecrowned shrikes, buffalo weavers, ashy tits, Burchell's
starlings and many other bushveld specials. Saturday evening's softly
crackling campfire was accompanied by the calls of whitefaced, pearlspotted
and barn owls, while a bronzewinged courser had his timid say from somewhere
not too far away. Etienne also reported seeing a Temminck's courser on the
way up, and Pauline reported great sparrows on the telephone wires along the
Opperman's driveway.
Liesel admitted hearing heavy breathing from somewhere above her head during Friday night, accompanied by the odd scuffle. Since she seemed unusually lucid we gave some credence to her story and mounted a concerted investigation. This consisted of the vice-chairman balancing precariously on a windowsill propped up by the Laniarius editor's husband. This revealed a wooly barn owl chick peering out from under the eaves, hissing exactly like an angry puffadder. The business of the weekend was to chart the way forward for the year, including the allocation of tasks to each committee member. Reportback from BLSA was heard, including the fact that there has been a delay in the posting of our latest issue of Laniarius: We are led to believe that it is now on its way to members. A fundraising event was discussed (watch this space), some new ideas for regional projects and conservation, and the expectations for our prospective administrative manager (see details in forthcoming Laniarius). Etienne filled us in on the latest additions to the website, and discussed possible avenues of developing this already fantastic club asset. Aldo Berruti was also there to give some BLSA perspectives, and take questions.I can heartily recommend the facility at Wolfhuiskraal. The house, an old dwelling with one main room and another three rooms plus a bathroom adjoining, is very well equipped with gas and paraffin appliances, cutlery and crockery, and all of the necessary furniture, all kept immaculately clean and in good repair. There is plenty of firewood to stoke the two donkies for hot baths. The rates are extremely reasonable (R30 pppn). Danie and Renette's number is (012) 722 0212.Pete Irons |
