Situated in Southern Zululand, the Birding Route meanders from the Babanango highlands through the rolling hills of Melmoth, and down to the forests of the Eshowe region which lies perched on the edge of the escarpment. From Eshowe the route drops down to Mtunzini on the coastal belt and then to Richards Bay where a wealth of wetland and coastal species are to be found. The route ends in the St Lucia area. One can start the route from either end or select any combination of destinations on the route. The entire route encompasses 10 different habitat types which support a total of over 400 bird species, 54% of the total South African species (excluding vagrants). A number of rare "specials" occur in the area, most notably the Woodwards' Barbet which occurs in the Ongoye Forest. Numerous other species such as Delegorgue's Pigeon, Spotted Thrush and Green Coucal (Yellowbill) make this route a must on any serious birders calendar. Big Birding day record counts achieved in this area have been in excess of 260 Species recorded, in a 24 hour period. Exciting birding destinations and good hospitality are the key ingredients of the Birding Route. A number of well informed and experienced birders are available for advice or as guides in the various areas. Contact the Zululand Birding Route via Telephone or Fax on +27(0)35-4741234.
