Guidelines

In interpreting the data, we invite birders to use their own experience and to provide observations and impressions from others as well. Very often local birders know a lot more then they think about the birds of the region. Although our database is growing and becoming substantial, in many cases experienced birders will be able to provide valuable insights and inputs.

Please do not hold back - your suggestions can only prompt replies and encourage participation - which is our ultimate aim!!

We suggest you use the following headings:

Headings

Distribution: Where does it occur and where does it not occur.

Gaps in Knowledge: What do we not know, can not see from the data yet. This should aim to encourage birders to provide additional data through ongoing contributions.

Habitat: We are in the process of describing in more detail the habitat types of the region, but for a start you can use the following terms: Grassland, hilly or rocky grassland, alien plantations, cultivated land, farmland, mixed bushveld, dry acacia savannah, broadleaved woodland, Kloofs and wooded gullies, gardens, urban areas, dams, lakes, marshes, wetlands, koppies, kloofs and cliffs.

Status and movements: Migrant/resident ? seasonal movements, common/rare. Nomadic, irruptive (in good seasons)

Population: Overall population estimate for region. Notes on population densities where available.

Conservation: In most cases, if birds are common, there will not be conservation issues. For endemics, Red data species and rarities, the issue of their protection is important. Look at what proportion of records are in reserves and the reporting rates from within and without conservation areas.
