About Indicator Birding:

Indicator Birding consists of Etienne Marais and Dr Pete Irons, who have been birding Southern Africa for several decades. We are adventurous birders who revel in finding new localities and new species in (supposedly) known areas.

We have an intimate knowledge of the old "Transvaal Area", and over the last few years our "Raiders of the Lost Lark" has been the team to beat in South Africa's big birding day.

Etienne Marais:

Former council member of BirdLife South Africa, and active birder for over thirty years experience, Etienne Marais knows the birds of Eastern South Africa intimately. He has led numerous tours across the region and also to Tanzania. Past Chairman of the Pretoria Bird Club, Etienne is a popular leader of club outings due to his ability to show people good birds, and get help birders get good views. In 2001, Etienne and Pete's "Raiders of the Lost Lark" smashed the old Southern African record for species recorded on a Birding Big Day. Over the last seven years, teams led by Etienne Marais have averaged 247 species per 24 hour period.

When not birding, Etienne runs a small web-development company, and is a family man, living in Centurion, Pretoria.

Pete Irons:

Pete has been an active birder since the age of 14. He has birded extensively in Southern Africa, the United States and South America, and is actively involved in leading conservation projects in Dinokeng - (north-east Gauteng). Pete is a popular leader of club outings, and customised tours to his local patch - which he knows intimately. It is partly due to Pete's knowledge of the wider area centred on NW Gauteng which enabled the Raiders of the Lost Lark to record 278 species in 24 hours - all within 60km of Pretoria!

When not birding Pete is a Veterinarian and family man, who lives with his family in the Seringveld Conservancy area. Click for Pete's CV
