16. MANGENI WATERFALL & GORGE

(4.5 kms from Babanango Stop Street)
A high clearance vehicle is recommended.

From Babanango, take the R68 to Dundee. After five and a half kilometers, stop and look for Widows, Chats and Malachite Sunbird. Continue for a further 10.5 kilometers and immediately after passing the second Vryheid turn-off, stop. Look over the dams to the left and right of the road for Pipits, Larks, African Spoonbills and Herons. Proceed for a further 19 kilometres and take the Isandlwana turn off to the left. After six kilometers, take the right fork and proceed for 500 meters along the ridge overlooking the plains below.

Pink-billed Lark, Red-headed Finch and Amur and Lanner Falcons could be seen here. Return to the fork and continue towards Isandlwana. After two kilometers, turn left to Qudeni. After a further two kilometers take another left turn continuing towards Qudeni and proceed for 12 kilometers ignoring all turn-offs. After crossing a saddle of land with a conical hill to the left, you will reach a one way bridge with a wide rocky river bed to the right. Immediately after the bridge, take a right turn onto a small track, with a drift made of concrete. Cross through the stream and immediately after crossing, take the smaller track that veers off to the right. Proceed for approximately one and a half kilometers until a rough rocky dry river bed is reached. Park here and walk forwards for about 300 meters. The Mangeni Falls and Gorge are too the right. This is the place to see Black and Wahlberg's Eagles, Lanner Falcon, Rock Kestrel and Spike-heeled Lark.
