18. RICHARDS BAY HARBOUR (BERM WALL)

Best time for birding: three hours before high tide.
A permit is necessary and obtainable from: The Port Captain, Box 181, Richards Bay, 3800. (0351-9053984)
Suggestion: Take a telescope.

Proceed along the John Ross Highway; take the harbour turn off opposite the Bay Crocodile Sanctuary. Proceed straight to the Custom's Post and search all mud-flats, especially at low tide. Uncommon summer waders include Mongolian and Sand Plovers, Eurasian Curlew, Bar-tailed Godwit, Red Knot and Terek Sandpiper. Also look for Lesser Crested Tern and breeding Red-winged Pratincoles. Examine the poles sticking out of the water and the mud banks carefully for Osprey. African Fish Eagle is also found here.
