Southern African Endemics List

Back to resources

The Southern African region boasts some 171 endemics and near endemics. While only 84 species are "true" endemics, the others occur marginally in countries like Angola, Zambia and Mocambique, and many are far more easily seen in Southern Africa.

This annotated list of endemics is derived from an updated list prepared for the forthcoming (2006) Roberts Bird Guide, by Hugh Chittenden. It is in excel format and includes an indication of where in the region each endemic can be seen. Download the excel version here. (35KB)
