Birding Tours

Indicator Birding offers custom-made and scheduled birding tours - from one to 21 days. We specialise in the Eastern parts of South Africa, but also have intimate knowledge of the whole of South Africa, Mozambique and parts of Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Customised tours are put together for your specific birding objectives, and we make every effort to ensure that a high proportion of target birds are seen while under our guidance. For more on customised (or "Tailor-made" birding trips, click here.

Short "Pretoria" tours.

The wider Pretoria has a very large diversity of birds, including over 60 "birders endemics". A short tour with Indicator Birding (1-5 days) in this area will produce a surprisingly high diversity of birds.

Whether visiting Johannesburg or Pretoria on business, or wanting to explore this prime area as part of a wider tour, we will put together a dynamic birding experience. The area can be thouroughly explored in five days, and summer expectations would be of 300 species in this period.

Eastern South Africa Tours

Eastern South Africa offers a huge diversity of birds, including all the classic African families, as well as a good range of endemics and other specialities.

The classic Eastern South Africa tour encompasses the lowlands of Maputaland for specials such as Pink-throated Twinspot, Neergaard's Sunbird and Rudd's Apalis. Eshowe is the base for an exploration of fine afromontane forests, including Ngoye, home of the Woodwards's.

We then visit the Drakensburg Massif at Sani Pass, as well as the best example of "highveld" grassland around Wakkerstroom - which offers a number of grassland endemics. The diverse habitat north and south of Pretoria offers a variety of bushveld species, as well as excellent wetland birding. On to Nylsvley - a Ramsar wetland, which in season provides an unparralleled waterbird experience. The tour also takes in Magoebaskloof, Northern Kruger Park and the escarpment of Mpumalanga for specials such as Taita Falcon and Striped Flufftail.

15 Days is the usual tour length, and one can expect to record some 430-500 species on this tour, depending on seasonality and the energy levels of the tour group!
