| Birding News: Eastern Endemics Circuit delivers the goods During September and October we ran several tours which were based on our "Eastern Endemics Circuit". This is an accessible way to encounter a wonderful host of regional and South African endemics in a short time, and can easily be combined with the Kruger National Park, Wakkerstroom, or other great localities to the south, where more of the countries western specials occur. The Eastern Endemics circuit can be done in 3 days, although 5-6 days is preferable. During the early and (mostly still dry spring) this year, we had some great birding in these areas. Some of the top birds seen included: Grassland specials such as Denham's Bustard, Yellow-breasted Pipit, Pale-crowned and Wing-snapping Cisticola, Melodious Lark, Buff-streaked Chat and Ground Woodpecker. A number of superb views of African Quailfinch and Orange-breasted Waxbill were obtained Excellent waterbirds including Goliath Heron, Maccoa and White-backed Duck, Pygmy Goose, African Rail and Finfoot Acacia Woodland Species such as Crimson-breasted Shrike, Southern Pied Babbler, Barred-wren Warbler, Common Scimitarbill, Brown-crowned Tchagra, Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill and Ashy Tit A host of waxbills, including three Firefinch species and other gems such as Black-cheeked and Violet Waxbills. Forest species such as Knysna Turaco, Southern-double Collared Sunbird, Narina Trogon, Orange ground-thrush and African Emerald Cuckoo. A variety of ground birds including Grey-winged, Red-winged and Orange-River Francolin This eastern endemics circuit is proving to be a very popular itinerary for shorter tours, whcih combine a variety of habitats, great scenery and an amazing diversity of birds. Through finding accomodation that is very good value for money, we are able to offer these tours at a very affordable price. You can view the typical Eastern Endemics Itinery here.
