South Africa Sampler - Forests to Deserts 12-29 January 2007 (18 Days)

Summary

This itinerary is a comprehensive South African tour which provides the opportunity to see all the major habitats and encounter almost all of the regional endemics and specials which occur in the region.

In addition the itinerary provides for some good mammal - watching - although this is secondary to the objective of seeing as many birds as possible.

The itinerary is fairly strenuous, reaching most corners of the country, but saves some time and avoids a couple of very long drives by including two internal flights. (Most of the longer distances we drive are over good roads with little traffic). Expectations for this trip are c.500 species, and c.14) endemics and near endemics. Most days will start before dawn and some will end after dark, though rest periods will also be scheduled where possible.

Despite potentially long days much of the birding will take place from the tour vehicle or from close to the vehicle with limited amounts of walking mostly over relatively easy, flat to undulating terrain. This tour will be lead by Etienne Marais. Etienne is one of South Africa's better known birders and has over 30 years birding experience. He has led many tours across the region and is an enthusiastic and energetic power-birder, having led a teams to a 24 hour totals in excess of 300 species. His approach to guiding is to help participants see more bird species than they expect, but he believes in quality as well as quantity - trying to get good detailed scope views of as many birds as possible.
